As a writer and editor, my mission is to help publications, and sometimes companies, tell stories that last.

The stories also have to be beautiful, useful and true.

In this video by the Content Marketing Institute, Robert Rose discusses two other requirements for telling stories for companies or brands.

1. They must be unique. "Focus on what makes you different," he says. "Not just incrementally better."

2. Zoom out. Rose asks, "How are you going to tell a story one month, two months, seven months or a year from now?" Building an editorial calendar and structuring a year on a theme, he says, gives the brand both longevity and structure.

Though all problems can't be solved with a spreadsheet, I'm of the firm belief that the solution to many of them can start there. I'm excited to open excel this morning and take on 2013 for my client. Short video. Enjoy the takeaways.

I've been thinking about starting a Pinterest account for my business, but have hesitated. First of all, everyone's doing it, and I didn't want to do it just to say I'm doing it. I thought it would be a hard sell because, though I work in a visual medium, my work (editing, writing and project management) aren't visual.

This video, from ragan.com gives some great ideas for non-visuals looking to get their business into Pinterest.

One idea I might pursue is posting mood boards for stories I'm writing or special sections I'm managing. Another thought: creating pinboards for each of my projects that help readers (and me) understand the brands I work with. Finally, simply posting inspiration boards might be a good idea.

I've experienced visual success lately, even if on a small scale. I post industry-related content regularly to my facebook page. I get a modest number of views. When I posted pictures of a DIY project (it had a direct connection to a story I was writing) views for that post doubled. That, coupled with the ideas in this video, have caused me to reconsider creating a Pinterest account for my little growing business.
